Eva Falaschi

Scientific Coordinator

I am a Global Encounters fellow at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen and the scientific coordinator of the project OltrePlinio, for which I was a research fellow from 2014 to 2020. In addition, I was a fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies (Harvard University), a James Loeb fellow at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte (München), and a scholar at the Getty Research Institute.

I taught Greek and Roman Archaeology at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa and run a reading group on Latin Literature at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen.

I got a Master of Arts in Classics at the University of Pisa, and studied Archaeology and Art History at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, where I earned the diploma and the PhD. I conducted research at the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität in München and at the University of Oxford. I also took part in excavations at the Agorà of Segesta and in archaeological surveys in Locri.

Thanks to my philological and art-historical training, I specialize in Greek and Roman literary sources of art, Greek and Latin technical terminology of art, art theories and canons, art treatises, biographical works on artists, and the reception of Greek art in the Roman world. I have extensively worked on Roman Imperial literature, especially Plutarch, Pliny the Elder, Dio Chrysostom, Lucian of Samosata, and Pausanias. Alongside, I have dealt with the fortune of antiquity in the modern era, especially in connection with art and nature. I have been working on Flavio Biondo’s Roma Triumphans and on Pliny the Elder’s influence on the description of the nature of the Americas. Furthermore, in the field of Digital Humanities, I helped develop the OltrePlinio website and some digital tools for the study of Pliny the Elder’s Naturalis Historia.

I organized international workshops in collaboration with the KU Leuven, the Universidad de Málaga, and the Accademia di Brera. I gave lectures and conferences in Italy, Europe, North and South America, and South Africa.
