Alessandro Poggio

Alessandro Poggio is Assistant Professor in Classical Archaeology at the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca.

He studied Archaeology and Ancient Art History in Pisa at the University and the Scuola Normale Superiore. He received his PhD from the Scuola Normale Superiore.

His research interests span from the Ancient Near East to the Graeco-Roman world: he has participated in archaeological projects in Italy and Turkey.

Among the themes of his researches there are the art of Anatolia and the Eastern Mediterranean in the first millennium BC, the cross-cultural interpretations of images of myth, ancient glyptic, the perception of Greek Art in Imperial Rome, and Ancient Literature on Art.

He has also developed a marked interest in materiality. Alessandro Poggio has undertaken the study of the use of stone, in particular marble, from a multidisciplinary perspective, which takes into account ancient literary sources, stylistic and iconographic features, and also archaeometric analyses. He is a member of the scientific board of the international journal “MARMORA. An International Journal for Archaeology, History and Archaeometry of Marbles and Stones”.

Alessandro Poggio is interested in exploring how computer science and technology can help in the development of innovative research tools.

He has been contributing to the OltrePlinio project since its foundation.
